Will converting JPG to PNG improve my image quality?
No. The JPEG is decoded into raster pixels and those pixels are encoded as PNG. PNG uses lossless encoding for that resulting raster, but converting from JPEG cannot restore detail already lost through JPEG compression.
Why is the converted PNG file larger than the original JPG?
PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression rather than lossy discrete cosine transform. Storing photographic pixel data without lossy discarding naturally requires more bytes.
Will my image gain a transparent background?
No. JPEG files have solid backgrounds. Converting to PNG preserves the existing solid pixels exactly as rendered.
